Funding through Philanthropy
The Jean-Marie Lehn Foundation raises funds from companies and individuals who are committed to the development of the University of Strasbourg and who wish to accelerate medical and environmental discoveries through chemistry.
These donations can be used to fund a research program conducted by your team, the purchase of equipment, or any other expenses related to your research activities. In addition to financial support, companies can also donate equipment, supplies, or software through the Foundation (in-kind donations).
Recognized as a public-benefit organization, the Jean-Marie Lehn Foundation issues tax receipts and enables corporate and individual donors to receive tax benefits.
The Jean-Marie Lehn Foundation supports all researchers in Strasbourg (across the three campuses) working in the field of chemistry and its intersections with biology, physics, and medicine.
The Foundation is actively engaged with the scientific community, regularly publicizing calls for proposals issued by foundations and organizations both in France and internationally, including the Foundation for Medical Research, the League Against Cancer, the Human Frontier Science Program, and the AXA Fund for Human Progress, among others.
Authorized to manage funds from these programs, the Foundation offers personalized support to researchers in preparing their grant applications to maximize their chances of success. It also provides a financial management tool (intranet) that is recognized and trusted by the scientific community, ensuring optimal and secure administration of the funds received.
Strasbourg of Medicines (IMS) received support from the Jean-Marie Lehn Foundation as part of a call for projects organized by AXA Mutuelles.
The IMS thus received more than €600,000 in funding, which was used to finance four doctoral fellowships

With 20 years of experience in managing and coordinating funding programs, and committed to ensuring transparency in decision-making, the Jean-Marie Lehn Foundation issues annual calls for proposals and convenes its scientific advisory board for each of its programs.
The Scientific Advisory Board, composed of individuals from outside the Foundation and the University of Strasbourg, has full autonomy in its decisions and issues recommendations that are subsequently approved by the Board of Directors.
Who is eligible to apply for calls for proposals?
The Jean-Marie Lehn Foundation comprises a network of selected researchers, approved by the Scientific Advisory Board and endorsed by the Board of Directors. Annual calls for proposals are open to researchers in this network, as well as to researchers who wish to join it. They must include an application for membership in the network with their project proposal.
Evaluation Process
In accordance with international standards for the competitive selection of research projects, the Foundation’s selection process is based on the principle of peer review. As such, the Foundation relies on an international community of scientific experts—from outside the Strasbourg campus—who independently conduct written evaluations.
The experts are primarily French and international scientists who are invited by the foundation, upon the recommendation of the scientific advisory board, based on criteria of expertise. Before being granted access to the complete application files, the evaluators sign a confidentiality agreement and declare that they have no conflict of interest. Projects are evaluated based on their originality, feasibility, significance, and excellence.
Every effort is being made to obtain a sufficient number of expert opinions to inform the scientific advisory board's discussions
After the experts have completed their individual evaluations, the scientific advisory board meets.
Collegial discussions held on each project—involving at least two members of the scientific advisory board and ensuring that there are no conflicts of interest with the projects under discussion—result in a ranking of the projects.
The criteria discussed are as follows:
- Clarity of Research Objectives and Hypotheses
- Innovative nature, originality, positioning relative to the state of the art
- Appropriateness of the methodology, management of scientific risks
- Expertise of the project leader and partners
- Alignment of the resources deployed and requested with the project’s objectives
Approximately 30% of the projects receive funding. The foundation is not involved in the selection of funded projects at any stage.
