Accelerating discoveries to address major societal challenges
The University of Strasbourg draws on an exceptional, internationally recognized scientific ecosystem in chemistry. This center of excellence has been built up over several decades through sustained investment, ambitious strategic planning, and collective commitment, driven in particular by leading figures such as Guy Ourisson and Jean-Marie Lehn.
As health and environmental challenges intensify, accelerating scientific innovation is no longer an option—it is a necessity. Since 2007, the Jean-Marie Lehn Foundation has been supporting innovative research projects that are now contributing to major breakthroughs, whether in the form of medical advances or solutions to protect the planet.

“Bygiving researchers the freedom to explore, test new ideas, and take scientific risks, the Foundation paves the way for groundbreaking discoveries: new therapies, more sustainable materials, more efficient processes, and a reduced ecological footprint.”

As long-standing partners, BASF and Banque Populaire Alsace Lorraine Champagne (BPALC) support these innovative research projects.
Banque Populaire Alsace Lorraine Champagne supports and encourages the ambitious, innovative, and transformative projects of the Jean-Marie Lehn Foundation. It strives to be a socially responsible bank, and the dynamism and success it has achieved are largely due to its commitment to the spirit of its founders, who envisioned it as a major regional cooperative bank.
A Remarkable Success Story: From Research to the REMEDY Startup
Supported by the Foundation since 2019, the project led by Bernard Doudin in Strasbourg has made it possible to develop a clean, simple, and effective method for purifying rare earth elements—materials that are essential for batteries, wind turbines, and motors. Without the Foundation’s support, this high-risk project would likely have never seen the light of day. In 2025, the startup REMEDY was founded to transform this scientific breakthrough into a promising industrial solution.
Equal Opportunity: Providing Tomorrow’s Talented Individuals with the Means to Succeed
The high standard of excellence in chemistry research in Strasbourg provides a unique environment for students, who benefit from training on state-of-the-art equipment and guidance from internationally renowned researchers, including several Nobel laureates.
The Foundation supports talented students by providing them with the resources they need to turn their ambitions into reality through bold scientific projects.
Master's Degree Scholarships
Every year, the Jean-Marie Lehn Foundation is committed to supporting master’s students at the Strasbourg Faculty of Chemistry. Thanks to the generosity of its donors, scholarships of up to 10,000 euros over two years are awarded to those who need them most.
