Two New ERC Proof of Concept Awardees in Strasbourg

Published on January 10, 2020

This highly selective European award was presented to Paolo Samorì, director of the Nanochemistry Laboratory at the Institute of Supramolecular Science and Engineering (ISIS, CNRS/Unistra) and to Andrey Klymchenko, research director at the Bioimaging and Pathologies Laboratory (UMR 7021 Unistra/CNRS) for exploring the innovative potential of their scientific discoveries:

  • materials for purifying water;
  • nanoparticles to detect cancer markers.

Clean Water for Everyone

A new ERC Proof of Concept grant has been awarded to Prof. Paolo Samorì for the research project “Graphene and related materials membranes for efficient removal of toxic cations from water.”

The GRAPHENE project will develop membranes based on graphene and related materials for efficient water purification through the removal of toxic pollutants such as ions, particles, and microorganisms.

Nanoparticles to Detect Cancer Markers

As the principal investigator of the ERC Consolidator project BrightSens, Dr. Andrey Klymchenko has been awarded an ERC Proof of Concept grant titled “Ultra-bright probes for amplified fluorescence in situ hybridization for cancer diagnosis.”

The AmpliFISH project aims to develop ultra-bright fluorescent nanoparticles to visualize target nucleic acids (RNA and DNA) inside cells with single-molecule sensitivity. The technology developed will be used for the simple and rapid detection of tumor markers with the goal of improving early cancer diagnosis.
