2019 CNRS Gold Medal for Thomas Ebbesen, Director of the Foundation

Published on July 4, 2019

This year, the CNRS Gold Medal—one of France’s most prestigious scientific awards—has been awarded to the Franco-Norwegian physical chemist Thomas Ebbesen.

Prof. Thomas Ebbesen’s work in nanoscience is highly interdisciplinary and spans fields as diverse as carbon materials science, optics, nanophotonics, and molecular chemistry.

The Gold Medal is the highest honor awarded by the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and will be presented to Professor Ebbesen on October 24, 2019, in Paris, during a special ceremony marking the CNRS’s 80th anniversary. Since 1954, this annual award has been given in recognition of an outstanding contribution to French research. In Strasbourg, Thomas Ebbesen is the fourth person to receive this medal. He follows in the footsteps of Jules Hoffmann, Jean-Marie Lehn, and Pierre Chambon.
